10,000 houses for poor to be ready soon

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE DEC. 14. The Union Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, H.N. Ananth Kumar, said here today that his ministry would construct an additional 10,000 houses under the Valmiki-Ambedkar Awaz Yojana in all taluks in the State.

Addressing presspersons after laying the foundation stone for houses for the poor, to be constructed under the scheme in Rajajinagar here, he said the Centre would release Rs. 50 crores for the project, which would be completed in five months. His ministry had constructed 10,312 houses earlier, and they would be given to beneficiaries, he added.

He said the ownership rights would be given to women. Each house would be built at a cost of Rs. 60,000, and the Government would provide a subsidy of Rs. 30,000. The beneficiary would have to repay the rest in 18 years, he added.

About the congestion on Bangalore roads, he said the Centre would grant Rs. 1,000 crores for constructing six flyovers. He urged the State Government to identify 100 sites around Bangalore for developing parks on the lines of Lalbagh and Cubbon Park. Mr. Kumar took exception to the criticism by the KPCC President, Allum Veerabhadrappa, that the Union Government was responsible for the death of the former minister, H. Nagappa, as it had failed to provide support for the operations against the forest brigand, Veerappan. He said law and order was a State subject, and the Centre could do little. The State Government did not make use of the support extended by the Centre, he added.

The minister stressed the importance of launching a joint operation by the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka STFs and the Central forces to nab Veerappan.
