Tamil Nadu
By Our Staff Reporter
The ``indifferent'' attitude of both the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governments led to the death. Delay in the release from jail of Kothaur Mani, Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam activist, was a reason for the death, he told presspersons here. The DPI members would pay homage to Keelavenmani victims, on December 25. (Fortyfour harijans were burnt alive by landlords in the Nagapattinam village, on December 25, 1968). The previous years DPI members were not allowed to pay homage. Now, after holding discussions with N. Varadarajan, State CPI (M) secretary, it was decided that the party cadres, along with marxist workers, pay homage. A public meeting would also be held in Thanjavur on January 8. Mr. Tirumavalavan said 8000 persons had changed their Hindu names. The Tamil Nadu Government should waive the fee of Rs. 150 paid for name change as these persons had taken Tamil names. ``I would appeal to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to consider this concession.'' On the Sattankulam Assembly byelection, he said the DPI would decide by month-end whether it should go it alone or contest in alliance. The DPI had a 25,000 vote-bank in the constituency, Mr. Tirumavalavan claimed.
