The police are yet to identify those behind the attack on a 51-year-old foreign tourist at Varkala in the wee hours of Friday. The Austrian tourist, Herbert, was attacked by an armed gang at his rented house near the Papanasam beach. The Varkala police have registered a case of attempted murder on the basis of the statement given by the tourist. Meanwhile, Varkala Kahar, MLA, has given a petition to the Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, and the Director General of Police, K. J. Joseph, urging them to take all steps to bring to book the accused at the earliest. He has also demanded that the police take adequate steps to ensure the protection of tourists coming to Varkala, he said.
