Pak. denies knowledge of Anees deportation

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Dec. 15. Pakistan has said it has no knowledge about the deportation of Anees Ibrahim, younger brother of the Karachi-based underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim, from Dubai.

Online, a Pakistan news agency, quoted an Interior Minister spokesman as saying ``UAE officials have not informed us formally of the deportation''. ``If he had been deported, everyone would have known,'' it quoted the spokesman as saying.

Khaleej Times reported on Saturday that he had been sent back to Pakistan though India had sought his extradition.

He was detained in the first week of this month in Dubai where he was suspected of being involved in murder and fraud. However, after interrogation by Dubai detectives he was deported to where he arrived from, the daily said.

Plot to kill U.S. diplomats

In another development, police in Karachi today claimed to have foiled a bid to kill U.S. diplomats in the port city and arrested three people. They have been identified as Asif Zaheer, Sohail Noor and Mohammed Yousaf. Asif Zaheer is said to be the main culprit in Sheraton bomb blast.

The Inspector-General of Police, Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, told a press conference that a car, meant for suicide-bombing, detonators and explosive material were seized from a building on Ameer Khusro road. The accused belong to Harkat Jihad Islami.
