A pleasant surprise, says Vajpayee

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 15. The Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, today lauded the "first victory" notched by the Bharatiya Janata Party under the new party team led by party president, Venkaiah Naidu.

"I was expecting the party to win, but a landslide victory with a two-thirds majority has come as a pleasant surprise," Mr. Vajpayee said at a meeting of party leaders here this evening.

While asking party leaders to focus on the coming Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections three months from now, Mr. Vajpayee said the winning of all three Assembly byelections in Rajasthan had especially encouraged the party further — elections in the State are due less than a year from now.

The Rajasthan elections have also given a boost to the new State unit president, Vasundhara Raje, and are certain to help the party make up its mind to send Uma Bharti to Madhya Pradesh to head the State unit there.

`Mandate for performance'

At Mr. Vajpayee's residence, where central party leaders and others met this evening, the BJP noted with satisfaction that the full-scale campaign by the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had "no effect" yielding "no result".

Venkaiah Naidu later said that after a first quick analysis, the leadership had concluded that it was a mandate for "our performance" in Gujarat and the outcome of the "negative campaign of our political opponents".

Although several Ministers in the Modi Government had lost, the party did not think that the people had punished them for non-performance. In several constituencies "local factors" led to the BJP's defeat, the party leadership concluded.

PTI, UNI report:

In Lucknow, the Chief Minister, Mayawati, said the BJP's victory would "open new doors for development, peace and progress of the State".

In a statement here, Ms. Mayawati, who is also the vice-president of the BSP, congratulated the BJP for securing a two-thirds majority in the polls.

Senior BJP leader, Lalji Tandon, said the results were clear indication that politics of appeasement had no place in Indian politics.

People's verdict: Naidu

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N.Chandrababu Naidu, said today that people's verdict was final in a parliamentary form of democracy.

Mr. Naidu, whose TDP is a key ally of the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre, also expressed happiness over the peaceful conduct of the elections, an official release in Hyderabad said.

The Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, described the BJP's victory as "the people's mandate against terrorism". The victory is also a stamp on the policies of the Prime Minister," Mr Chautala said in Karnal.

`Empty claims exposed'

The Jharkhand Chief Minister, Babulal Marandi, told newsmen in Ranchi today that the BJP's victory in the Godda Lok Sabha seat proved that the State Government's fast progress in development works had been recognised.

The BJP State president and Rajya Sabha MP, Abhyakant Prasad, said that the mandate had exposed the "empty claims" of the Opposition and also showed people's support to the Government's policies and performance.
