Athletics: Shankar sets new 400m hurdles mark

By Abhijit Sen Gupta

Madhuri Gurmule (385)of Maharashtra who won the 10,000 meters for woman at the Games.

HYDERABAD DEC. 16. Andhra Pradesh had reason to cheer on the second day of the athletics events of the 32nd National Games at the G.M.C. Balayogi stadium here today.

P. Shankar of AP clocked 51.37 seconds to create a new meet record in the 400 metre hurdles and win the gold in great style. With 150 metres left, Shankar, who is an Asian junior bronze medallist in this event, took the lead and powered his way to the tape fighting off a strong challenge from Abhishek Pandey of Uttar Pradesh, who had to settle for the silver.

Madhuri Gurnule of Maharashtra put up a splendid display of endurance and stamina to win the women's 10,000m race and in the process equalled her own meet record, while Jagdish Basak of Punjab and Kavita Pandya of Maharashtra emerged as the fastest man and woman respectively.

Madhuri Gurnule, defending the gold she won in the same race in the earlier edition in Punjab (where she had also won the 5000 gold), ran a splendid race. The-24-year-old from Nagpur had arrived in Hyderabad yesterday after a long train journey and had had no practice after reaching here.

For the first half of the race the lead changed hands till Pushpa of Delhi led the pack around the track for a few laps. With about 10 laps to go, Madhuri took over the lead and began to step up the pace leaving the others far behind.

Thereafter with no competition in sight she continued doing lap after lap with her easy running style and finished almost a lap ahead of second placed Pushpa of Delhi. Madhuri equallled her own meet record of 34m 50.89 seconds set in the Punjab Games. Third was Aruna Devi of Manipur and AP's Nagamani was fourth.

In the men's 100m Jagdish Basak got off to a flying start and was a couple of yards in the lead by the half way stage and never looked back. There was a stiff fight for the second and third place and barely five metres before the tape Sanjay Ghosh of Services managed to get ahead of Ganesh Satpute of Maharashtra for silver and bronze respectively. The timings were, however, nothing to get excited about.

The women's 100m was also a similar story. Kavita Pandya shot off the blocks first and was in the lead by the half way stage. She managed to retain the lead despite a strong challenge by Vinitha Tripathi of AP towards the end.

In the women's 400 metres also P. Udaylaxmi of AP successfully defended the gold she had won in the Punjab Games.
