Harika breaks Humpy's record

By Our Special Correspondent

PANAJI DEC. 17. Close on the heels of Aarthie Ramaswamy becoming the third Woman Grandmaster of the country, the reigning Asian under-18 chess champion Dronavalli Harika today met the technical requirements to become the youngest Woman International Master in the continent.

Harika, who has a rating of 2248, defeated Tana Holusova of Czech Republic to reach six points from 10 rounds in the World junior chess championship here.

The tally gave Harika her third norm and paved the way for the coveted title.

Harika, who turns 13 on January 12 next year, will replace Koneru Humpy as the youngest to reach the landmark.

For Harika, the winner of three World age-group medals, this year has been a very fruitful one.

The Guntur-girl won the Asian under-18 title at Bikaner and with it, made her maiden WIM-norm. She made her second norm during the National `A' championship for women and has now added a 10-game norm.
