Totally illogical

Sir, — The Prime Minister's statement that the Muslim community has not condemned Godhra enough, and that even today they have not opposed it sufficiently (The Hindu, Dec.18), is most unfortunate. To begin with, most of the Muslim leadership had condemned the Godhra tragedy, but the condemnations got dwarfed by the immediate violence, which began in the streets of Gujarat. This statement also paints the whole Muslim community in a uniform single monolithic mass, which is not true. No community is uniform and one will see the shades of good, bad and ugly in all the communities. To implicate the whole Muslim community for the Godhra carnage is totally illogical and violates the democratic norms of our society.

Ram Puniyani,
Mumbai
