Programme to tap thorium for n-energy

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 19. Anil Kakodkar, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, today unveiled a Rs. 100-crore programme which seeks to radically change the nuclear energy scene through the tapping of thorium as an alternative to uranium, the traditional source of nuclear power.

The programme is significant as India has a vast reserve of thorium, and ever since the inception of the country's nuclear programme, it had been the endeavour of scientists to develop technologies to tap the mineral. Now, there is some cause for hope following the strides made in the area of particle accelerators.

Delivering a lecture here to mark the 13th foundation day of the Nuclear Science Centre, Dr. Kakodkar said developments in the area of particle accelerators gave hope that technology to tap thorium could be achieved within the next 15 to 20 years.
