9 Al-Qaeda suspects held

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Dec. 19. In a joint operation the Pakistan police and personnel of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the U.S. are believed to have arrested nine persons near Lahore on suspicion of links with the Al-Qaeda. Among the detained were two American nationals and one Canadian.

Reports from Lahore said that there was an exchange of fire between the raiding party and the alleged militants hiding in a house in a village close to the Indian border.

Satellite photos have reportedly been recovered from the site though it was not yet clear whether they have revealed any thing significant.

Pakistan Television reported that the arrested persons were involved in `criminal activities' and made no mention about their association with the Al-Qaeda. Among the nine persons detained were a physician, who is believed to have frequently travelled to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the American cities.
