BJP assails Sonia's remarks

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 19. The Bharatiya Janata Party today described the acceptance of defeat in Gujarat by the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, as "without grace'' as she had not recognised that it was the people of Gujarat who had voted in favour of the BJP. Instead, she preferred to blame her party's bad showing on "vicious campaign'' by the BJP.

The BJP spokesperson, V.K. Malhotra, was perhaps referring to Ms. Gandhi's address to her parliamentary party this morning.

Mr. Malhotra said no one had made any allegation about irregularities in the election process and that was all the more reason to gracefully accept the verdict.

As for the allegation of a "vicious campaign'' by the BJP, he pointed out that the Congress had also made all kinds of vicious charges during its campaign — describing the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, as `Kansa' and Ministers Uma Bharti and Sushma Swaraj as `Surpanakhas'.
