Major train accident averted

Ludhiana Dec. 19. In what could have been a major rail accident this evening, two passenger trains came close to colliding with each other at the railway station here after one train jumped the track and moved in the direction of another approaching train.

The Ludhiana-Ferozepur passenger had started moving from platform No. 5 at around 5.50 p.m. when it is believed to have jumped the signal as a result of which it started moving on the same track on platform No. 4 on which the Ambala-Amritsar passenger was approaching, railway sources said.

They said the guard of the Ludhiana-Ferozepur passenger, showing presence of mind, applied the brakes well in time and the two trains came to a halt on the same track with very less distance separating them. No casualties were reported, the sources added. — PTI
