This Day That Age
The new Sheriff of Madras was Mr. P.V.S. Vencatachellum, a businessman in condiments which were exported to foreign countries too. His great grandfather, Parasurama Vencatachellum, had lived in Madras as far back as in 1800. He inaugurated the pioneering condiments company in 1860. The Sheriff's grandfather, Subramaniam Pillai, had worked for the uplift of the depressed classes, and been associated with political leaders T. M. Nair, Sir P. T. Thyagaraja Chetty, the Raja of Panagal, Dr. C. Natesa Mudaliar, and M. C. Raja. The new Sheriff was a trustee of the Sri Dakshinamurthy Swamigal Temple in Washermanpet. He was also involved in running a school and a dispensary.
