Tamil Nadu sitting pretty

CHENNAI DEC. 20. Left-handers S. Sriram (94) and Hemang Badani (86) took their overnight third-wicket stand to 186 as Tamil Nadu, resuming at 144 for two, finished its first innings at 314, for a 192-run lead, on the second day of the four-day Ranji Trophy elite group `B' encounter at the Chidambaram Stadium, here, on Friday.

The host is in a position to gain a bonus point, rewarded for an innings or 10-wicket win, having reduced the visitor to 78 for four when play was called off, with 13 overs remaining, owing to bad light. Speedster L. Balaji accounted for both openers, of them B.B.C.C. Mohapatra clean bowled in the very first delivery of the innings.

At the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi, former champion Mumbai recovered to 248 from 101 for seven in its first innings, thanks to a 87-run stand between Ramesh Powar (71) and Sairaj Bahutule (67). In another encounter, Delhi came back with a bang at the Kotla to gain a vice-like grip over Andhra.

Among the other notable performers in the elite group matches were Punjab's Vineet Sharma (five for 22), Bengal's Saurashish Lahiri (five for 66) and Andhra's K.S. Shahabuddin (seven for 35).
