The KSSP, in a letter to the Prime Minister, said that the proposed type of inter-basin transfer of water has invited a lot of criticism the world over, owing to its adverse impact on environment and humans. The letter, signed by the KSSP president, T. Radhamony, and general secretary, N.K. Sasidharan Pillai, said the river grid project would include the construction of a number of barrages and large dams. This might naturally lead to largescale displacement and irreversible environment destruction, not to mention the adverse impact on the ecological balance of the riverine sector. The KSSP wanted the Centre to publish the project report and the environmental impact assessment report to initiate a public debate before a final decision is taken. The KSSP also felt that the Central Government's moves were nothing but an attempt to tighten its control over land, water, and forest resources and to encroach upon the people's right over natural resources. The KSSP also recalled that the Nehru Government had rejected the Dastur Plan, which envisaged linking of major rivers in the country on the basis of the technical and environmental objections made by several water resources experts.
