Tennis: Nitin to meet Vishal

By A. Joseph Antony

HYDERABAD Dec. 20. Top seed Nitin Kirtane and rank outsider Vishal Punna entered the men's singles final at the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh tennis complex here on Friday.

Kirtane crushed Tamil Nadu's Vinod Sridhar 6-2, 6-0, while Punna overcame Chandigarh's Chatwinder Singh 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

On the distaff side, the showdown will be between two women from Andhra Pradesh — Sania Mirza, a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Sonal Phadke and Manisha Malhotra, a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 victor over Archana Venkatraman 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the last four stage.

Punna called the shots from the net, intercepting almost anything hit in his direction. The gangling Hyderabad youth was especially strong on his backhand drop volleys that fetched him points by the bagful.

Games went with serve in the first set, until the seventh when Chatwinder broke Vishal and again in the ninth enabling the former wrap up the set. Making the most of his height, Vishal unleashed some powerful serves, wresting the first game of the second set from Chatwinder. The latter managed to hold his own only in the third, as Vishal took the contest into three sets.

In the decider, Vishal's dominance couldn't be shaken off, his wristy diagonal backhanded drops leaving Chatwinder out of place with increasing frequency.

As much as the Chandigarh lad exulted in winners, equally dejected or more so was he when things went wrong.

The crowd was understandably raucous, considering that AP's `lal' (son) Vishal, as one placard put it, was in the arena. That seemed to vex Singh no end as he let it affect his game, unable to check the drift to defeat.

The results:

Men's singles (semifinals): Nitin Kirtane (Mah) bt Vinod Sridhar (TN) 6-2, 6-0, Vishal Punna (AP) bt Chatwinder Singh (Cha) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Doubles (final): Nitin Kirtane/Sandeep Kirtane (Mah) bt Vijay Kannan/Kamala Kannan (TN) 7-5, 6-4. Bronze:Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh.

Women's singles (semifinals): Sania Mirza (AP) bt Sonal Phadke (Mah) 6-1, 6-0, Manisha Malhotra (AP) bt Archana Venkatraman (Kar) 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.
