Basketball: TN, Punjab in men's final

HYDERABAD Dec. 20. Tamil Nadu stayed on course to add the basketball gold of the 32nd National Games to its National title as it staved off a late rally from Services 69-63 in the men's semifinal at the Swarnandhra Pradesh Sports Complex Indoor stadium, Gachibowli, on Friday.

In Saturday's final, the favourite will take on defending champion Punjab, which after a poor start bounced back to defeat Karnataka 86-58.

Karnataka appeared set to pull off a major upset, but failed as Parminder Singh Sr. and Gagnesh Kumar came back firing on all cylinders to put Punjab in the clear.

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh, backed well by a capacity crowd, entered the women's final with an easy 83-60 win over Madhya Pradesh.The results (semifinals):

Men: Tamil Nadu 69 (Robinson 22, Sridhar 11) bt Services 63 (Dilip Kumar 14, Sambhaji Kadam 13); Punjab 86 (Parminder Singh Sr. 28, Gagnesh Kumar 22, Parminder Singh Jr. 14, Prithpal Singh 14) bt Karnataka 58 (Murali Mohan 19, Umashankar 16, Stalin 13).

Women: Andhra Pradesh 83 (Sofi Sam 23, Laiji 20, Jetty Jose 19) bt Madhya Pradesh (Savita Deshwal 18, Nanda Jain 16, Nidhi Chandra 12); Chhattisgarh 78 (Poonam Singh 31, Anju Lakra 17, Seema Singh 16) bt Tamil Nadu 61 (Preethi 23, Vidya Sivakumar 16, Adhirai 10).
