Kayaking, Canoeing: Services, Kerala steal the show

HYDERABAD DEC.20. Services and Kerala shared the honours on the second day of the kayaking and canoeing competitions winning four and three golds respectively at stake on the second day during which new Games records were set in all the eight races where medals were decided in the 32nd National Games at Hussain Sagar Lake here on Friday.

It was Kerala which bagged the first gold in the women's kayak singles 500 m final with K.Minimol clocking a record timing of 2.10.06 erasing the previous record of 2.14.28.

Smitha Assis (AP) and Abha (Andaman & Nicobar) settled for silver and bronze respectively with timings of 2.13.66 and 2.17.46.

Then Andhra Pradesh picked its lone gold of the day when S.Subhash, four-time Senior national champion, clinched his first National Games gold in the canoeing singles race with a new record timing of 2.07.82 eclipsing the previous one of 2.13.58.

B.Vagaram of SSCB (2.09.10) and Rajesh Kurien of Kerala (2.11.73) bagged the silver and bronze respectively. Andhra contingent was disappointed at the over enthusiasm of a gentleman handling the rescue, motor boat. who raced

away close to the canoeing doubles race in 500 m which saw Andhra's Sanjoy and Amuteen lose control of the boat because of the waves created by the motor boat.

After that they couldn't really recover and had to be content with second spot and a silver as Services Ajit Kumar won the gold with another new record timing of 1.55.39, beating the previous best of 1.56.59. And then for the rest of the day it was kayaks and canoeists from Services and Kerala who ruled the waters.

Services won the gold in the kayak singles, doubles and fours races in 500 m racec. And it was Kerala women who stole the show winning the K2 and K-4 races.

Canoeing doubles: 1. SSCB (Ajit Kumar & Daleep) 1.55.39 NMR, 2. Andhra Pradesh (Sanjoy & Amuteen), 3. Punjab (Mahesh & Anand).

Kayaking singles: 1. Karma Toppo (SSCB) 1.49.88 NMR, 2. Prashant Thomas (AP), 3. Naveen Sahu (MP).

Kayaking doubles: 1. SSCB (P.K.Baroi & Karma Toppo) 1.41.28 NMR, 2. Kerala (D.V.S.Negi & B.Surender), 3. Chandigarh (Lalith Kumar & A.K.Chobhey).

Kayaking fours: 1. SSCB (P.K.Baroi, Karma Toppo, Ashish S.Kumar & P.S.Madhu) 1.30.02, 2. AP (Sanjoy, Rateesh, Jayesh, Antony), 3. Karnataka (Saji Thomas, M.M.Biju, S.M.Mahesh, Saw Kalyan).

Women: Kayaking singles: 1. K.Minimol (Ker) 2.10.06 NMR, 2. Smitha Ashis (AP), 3. Abha (A & N).

Kayaking doubles: 1.Kerala (K.Minimol & D.Jessy Mol) 2.01.27 NMR, 2. AP (Neeteswari & Kocumol), 3. Andaman & Nicobar (Abha Manjula & Srimanthi Sardar).

Kayaking fours: 1. Kerala (K.Minimol, D.Jessymol, K.N.Bindu, U.Vincymol) 1.47.50 NMR, 2. AP (Smitha, Reshmi, Kochumoul, Bindu), 3. A & N (Srimathi Sardar, Soloni, Rita, Abha Manjula).
