Peace process must ensure unity: Ranatunga

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE DEC. 20. It is important that Sri Lanka remains united and does not split for any reason, an MP from that country, Arjuna Ranatunga, said today.

While the Opposition would back the peace parleys with the LTTE, it would not fail to highlight lacunae, if any, in the Government's handling of the issue.

The former Sri Lanka cricket captain, who calls himself an "L board'' candidate in politics, told presspersons here that the Government had sought unstinting cooperation from the Opposition in the ongoing talks.

The Opposition had agreed to the Government's request to give the process some time as the ethnic issue could not be resolved overnight.

But it was not in favour of allowing the LTTE to run a parallel Government in areas dominated by it, with its own judiciary, police and revenue set-up.

He said the peace process must ensure that the island nation remained united.

On his innings in politics, Mr. Ranatunga said his heart was still on the cricket ground, though he had retired from the game
