Mr. Krishna, who is in Delhi, is likely to discuss the matter with AICC leaders and also that of the twice held-up appointments of party members as chairpersons of boards and corporations. The three seats of nominated members fell vacant on December 4. One of the retiring members was the former Deputy Chairman, David Simeon. The Congress needs the support of the three persons to be nominated to inch towards a majority in the Upper House. It has 34 members in the 75-member House which has three vacancies. The ruling party is eager to have the Deputy Chairman elected from its ranks. The Chairman, B.L.Shankar, belongs to the neutral group of the Janata Dal. Mr. Simeon was with the JD(S). According to Congress circles, at least one of the three to be nominated to the Council will be a distinguished person from outside the ranks of politics. Again, the name of Sudha Murthy, wife of N.R.Narayana Murthy of Infosys, is being mentioned. The names of Congress leaders such as Prakash Rathod (KPCC General Secretary and former State cricketer), V.S.Ugrappa (PCC spokesman and former MLC), P.M.Ashok (PCC Secretary), Vijayalakshmi Ramanna (PCC General Secretary), D.S.Gowda, former MLA, and Mohan Kumar Kondajji, former PCC spokesman, are being mentioned as probable candidates. However, a surprise choice is not being ruled out.
