Rahul Dravid is The Sportstar's 'Sportsperson of the Year'

Chennai Dec. 21. Rahul Dravid, who has stood like a pillar this year amidst glory as well as ruins in Indian cricket at the international level, has been named The Sportstar magazine's Sportsperson of the Year - 2002.

The Sportstar, a sister publication of The Hindu, began naming its annual Sportsperson of the Year in 1994. The first to win the award, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, was Sachin Tendulkar. Since then, others who have won the prestigious award include Viswanathan Anand, Leander Paes, Mohammed Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi together, Karnam Malleswari and Pullela Gopi Chand.

The magazine has also honoured the man who was picked by Wisden this year as the Indian Cricketer of the Century. Kapil Dev wins The Sportstar's Legend of Indian Sport award, which too carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

Over the years, the other Sportstar legends have been Sunil Gavaskar, Ramanathan Krishnan, Leslie Claudius, Sailen Manna, Milkha Singh and P.T. Usha.

Meanwhile, The Sportstar's Young Achiever award for 2002 goes to the teenaged Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel.
