Cricket
By Mohandas Menon
** India's 99 was its second lowest total in New Zealand, after the 81 at Wellington in February 1976, while New Zealand's 94 was its lowest against India surpassing its previous lowest of 100 at Wellington, in February 1981. New Zealand's just managed to surpass the lowest at this venue 93 by the home team against Pakistan in January 1993. ** For the first time in Test cricket history, both the teams were dismissed for less than 100 in the first innings of a Test match. Incidentally only twice before this dubious feat had come close to being achieved: Australia (63) and England (101) at the Oval in August 1882 and Australia (92) and England (100) also at the Oval in August 1890. India is the first team in Test history to take a first innings lead after being dismissed for a two-digit score. ** Zaheer, playing his 15th match, became the fourth bowler to aggregate 50 wickets during this calendar year, after Australian Shane Warne (67 wickets in 10 matches), fellow Indian Harbhajan Singh (62 in 13) and Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan (55 in 8). ** Zaheer has the distinction of being the highest wicket-taker among pace bowlers in 2002. Australian paceman Glenn McGrath has 47 wickets in 10 matches during this year. ** The third day of this Test match provided the only second occasion, when all four innings was played on the very same day of the Test match. On June 30, 2000, a similar feat was achieved when England played West Indies at Lord's. The details of both the matches are as follows: 30th June 2000 at Lord's (188 runs for 21 wickets): West Indies 0-1, England 134-10 West Indies 54-10, England 0-0; 21st December 2002 at Hamilton (279 runs for 22 wickets): India 7-2, New Zealand 94-10, India 154-10, New Zealand 24-0.
