Before leaving for Paramakudi, Vasanthi Devi, chairperson, told The Hindu here today that she would go into the circumstances that led to the death of Karuppi (40). ``After completing the investigation and receiving the report from the Sub-Collector, Aashish Chatterjee, the Commission will decide the future course of action.'' The police claim that her death was a case of suicide. The woman was taken to the police station on November 25 on the charges of stealing money and gold jewels from the house in which she had been working for more than six years. The police, according to social activists, tortured and detained her in the station for nearly a week. Three of her relatives-Christudoss and Arumugam along with the two and a half year old Anitha - were also picked up for interrogation. They were, however, released a day before Karuppi's death. On December 1, she was found hanging from a nearby wireless tower. The activists allege that the police transgressed the laws when they detained Karuppi and her relatives for interrogation. The services of women constables were not sought for interrogation. Nor was a custody memo served on the victims. Even medicare was denied to Karuppi by the police, who allegedly tortured her inside the station for six days.
