Karpov bests Kasparov

Chennai Dec. 21. In a rapid match between two former World champions, Anatoly Karpov surprised World No.1 Garry Kasparov by 2.5-1.5 to win the X3D World chess match at New York on Thursday and Friday.

In game two, Kasparov, who dominated with white pieces against a Petroff's Defence, saw Karpov pull off a spectacular bishop skewer to net the white queen and draw level.

In the third game, Karpov reached a quiet rook and knight ending and stamped his class by demonstrating how an active rook will win with exemplary technique.

Kasparov was only able to draw the fourth game facing another Petroff's Defence.

In a press release from New York, Owen Williams, manager of Garry Kasparov has said, the Kasparov-Deep Junior match will take place in New York from January 22 to February 2, 2003.
