Wipro Infotech surges ahead

THE DOLLAR 5 billion West Asia market comprising the GCC countries and Emirates offers lucrative hunting ground for Indian software companies. The problem lies in the fact that Indian firms have to compete with international consulting big wigs for projects. TCS, Wipro Infotech and Satyam Computers have successfully forayed into this market.

"This market is expected to grow at 20 per cent year-on-year. Our primary competition is with international players. Since 60 per cent of the IT people (both consumers and technical side) are expat-Indians, there is awareness of Wipro's brand. The cost factor advantage however does not work as most of the projects are onsite," explained Anil K. Jain, Manager, Business Development, Marketing & Innovation, Wipro Infotech to The Hindu.

Of the $2.2 billion revenues that Wipro Infotech recorded during the second quarter of fiscal 2003, the West Asia contributed $1 billion. Going forward the oil and gas sector in this region would become a thrust area for Wipro Infotech.

An e-government project for the Dubai Government and an ERP project for Dubai Dry Docks are some of the recent wins.

As of now the IT firm's focus in West Asia includes ERP/SAP applications for the manufacturing vertical along with banking software and web-enabling banks (applications).

Some interesting developments on the hardware front are possibilities of Tablet PCs from the Wipro Infotech stable. However, "this will be done depending on the market response to the Tablet PCs available now.

We have production engineering team at Wipro's Bangalore centre capable of developing sophisticated software required for the Tablet PC," observed Mr. Jain.
