Azlan Shah re-elected President of AHF

Chennai Dec. 22. Sultan Azlan Shah and Tan Sri P. Alagendra, both of Malaysia, were re-elected as President and Secretary-General respectively of the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) on December 18.

While the Sultan was elected without a contest, Alagendra won with an overwhelming majority against the Singapore candidate, Ms. Annabel Dillon, for the post of Secretary General. This is Alagendra's third term in the AHF. He is also the Deputy President of the Malaysian Hockey Federation.

Mr. Fumio Ogura of Japan continues to be the Treasurer.

The five vice-presidents elected on Thursday were M. Ueda of Japan (41 votes), K.P.S. Gill of India (40), Shin Bark Jae of South Korea (31), Brig Mussarat Ullah Khan of Pakistan (40) and P. Raj Kumar Singh of India (16).

The meeting decided to allot the men's Asia Cup to Malaysia for 2003 while India succeeded in its bid to host the Asian women's Championship in the same year.

The Junior Men's AHF Cup will be held in Singapore, the Junior Women's in Taiwan and the Junior Men' Asia Cup, the World Cup qualifier in Pakistan, 2004. Malaysia and Oman are the reserve candidates for the 2004 Junior World Cup qualifier, if Pakistan is unable to host the event.

Thyagarajan gets another term

Mr. S. Thyagarajan, Deputy Editor and Hockey Correspondent, The Hindu, (India) was nominated again for the third term as Chairman of the Media Commission. He is also the Chairman of the Field Hockey Commission in the International Sportswriters Association (AIPS).
