Chaos prevails at National children's tourney

By Our Sports Reporter

KOLKATA DEC. 24. The 16th edition of the National children's chess for under-13 and under-11 categories saw chaos and confusion reign supreme in the opening rounds as the premier sub-junior tournament got underway at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Monday.

The meet, which presented a staggering field of above 450 participants in four categories, left the organiser, West Bengal Chess Association, bemused. The first round saw numerous repetitions forcing the All India Chess Federation arbiters withhold the first round results to rework the pairings.

The correct results came to light only prior to the second round on Tuesday. Though having cleared a lot of the mess, the organiser is yet to trace the affiliation of each of the participants as the initial round results came up without naming the State which a player is representing.

The top seeded players took full points and the first two rounds did not see much upsets in the boys' under-13 section, while the under-11 boys' second round appeared to be a mine-field as top seed Akash Das Sarma fell to 74th seeded Meghan Sushil Gupte and the fourth seeded B. Adhiban and fifth seeded Y. Sandeep were held to draws.

In the girls' under-13 section second round, top seeded Mary Ann Gomes was held to draw by 42nd seeded N. Janani Priya. Fourth seeded M. Rajdarshini met the same fate as Gomes while fifth seeded Saheli Nath was beaten by 46th seeded Prachi Nand Kishore.
