Asian Social Forum to focus on anti-globalisation movement

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Dec. 26. Over 10,000 delegates from more than 300 organisations representing social movements, trade unions, Dalit, women and youth organisations, cultural activists, research institutions and NGOs from all parts of Asia are gathering in Hyderabad for the Asian Social Forum from January 2 to 7, 2003.

Informing the press about this event, Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy, chairman of the host committee, said that the Asian Social Forum is part of the World Social Forum (WSF) movement, which has emerged as the rallying point for all those opposed to globalisation.

He argued that unlike the current globalisation of finance and trade, the WSF platform provided space for all those who wanted a "globalisation of people''. He said that WSF was not an organisation or a united front but rather an open space for reflection, debate, formulation of proposals and exchange of experiences among all those opposed to the "Washington consensus'' of economic liberalisation.

He added that WSF, of which the Asian Social Forum was a part, was not simply about building resistance to economic globalisation but also about proposing alternatives for a better, more emancipated and egalitarian world. Issues of peace, justice, communalism and war would also be raised at the Forum, he said.
