Sportsman crippled by negligence

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Dec. 26. Ironical it may sound, but the leg of a youngster, who was returning from Sonia Gandhi's public meeting in Warangal on December 21, had to be amputated due to the alleged negligence of a private hospital, which was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi herself the same day.

A former junior national volleyball player, Venu of Khambalapalli village in Mahabubabad mandal of Warangal district, was seriously injured in an accident while returning from the public meeting at Warangal addressed by the AICC president, Sonia Gandhi. He along with eight others were shifted to a private hospital owned by a former MP.

However, the Congress activists, who suffered fractures on legs and hands, remained allegedly unattended by orthopaedicians despite the hospital being a full-fledged one.

With no proper treatment coming, Venu was shifted to NIMS after 12 hours of wait, while others were shifted to the MGM hospital at Warangal due to the intervention of V. Rajeshwar Reddy, a Congress leader.

But the absence of an orthopeadician even at NIMS forced the guardians of Venu to take him to Apollo Hospitals.

But despite the best efforts of doctors, his right leg had to be amputated. "Had the treatment come at right time, his leg would have been saved,'' feel friends and relatives of Venu.

However, none of the senior Congress leaders, who were basking in the success of the meeting visited the injured and offered help. "Except a few none of the leaders bothered to help us financially or emotionally.

They should remember that all the injured were diehard activists of the party and met with the accident when they went to attend the party meeting,'' says a friend of Venu.

Former Minister, Marri Shashidhar Reddy, was the only one to meet the injured Venu and extend financial help of Rs. 10,000.
