Dalit assaulted

KOLAR (Karnataka) DEC. 26. In a macabre incident, a Dalit youth was assaulted and forced to drink urine after a petty quarrel in Bellappanahalli village today.

Police said Venkatesh, an auto driver, got into a verbal duel with Nagi Reddy, over a petty issue, and was brutally assaulted by the latter and his friends. Eyewitnesses said that when Venkatesh asked for water, he was forced drink urine. He was later admitted to the Government General Hospital.

As the news spread, tension gripped the village with people belonging to the Dalit community staging a dharna in front of Circle Inspector's Office, demanding the arrest of the culprits. Six persons have been arrested.
