TTD nod for new 'prakaram'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA DEC. 28. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Trust Board today, proposed to construct one more `prakaram' at the Lord Venkateswara shrine here in accordance with the `Agama Sastras', `Shila Sastra' and temple architecture etc., without altering the existing structure. The purpose is to add one more layer in view of terrorist threat to the temple, to expand the congested `potu' (kitchen) complex and to expand the `kalyanotsavam mandapam'.

The TTD chairman, P. Chalapathi Rao, told mediapersons that all the seven agama pundits in the newly-constituted temple agama advisory committee had agreed to the proposal and specified as to what extent the proposed `prakaram' could be built. According to the rough estimates, the project would cost Rs. 50 crores.

The TTD executive officer, Ajeya Kallam, said the proposed `maha prakaram' would have a `rajagopuram' on the eastern side and another `gopuram' on the western side. The TTD joint executive officer, P. Balasubramanyam, said that the project was being taken up keeping in mind the pilgrim rush. Meanwhile, the TTD which had imposed certain crubs on the pre-dawn ritual, angapradhakshinam, earlier this month, today said there would be no change in the decision.
