Khadi Utsav from January 1

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Dec. 28. Freed of its "political" past, khadi is fast becoming a high-fashion fabric. With various blends and finishes, it has become a sought after fabric by leading designers.

"Khadi at Your Doorstep" is the focus of the month-long Khadi Utsav organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB), which will travel across Bangalore stopping at six different locations from January 1.The main attraction of the utsav is the "Khadi n' Style" designer wear for the trendy young. This year, there are designs by "Ambara", the first exclusive designer khadi wear showroom in India, and other designers from Bangalore. Big names in the fashion world such as Rohit Bal are also known to be experimenting with khadi fabric. Khadi will also be available as silk, "poly vastra", jeans, and wool.

"The Khadi Utsav is based on feedback from our earlier experience with the exhibition at Fort High School Grounds," said Bore Gowda, Chief Executive Officer, KVIB, Karnataka. That was a static exhibition that resulted in the sale of products worth Rs. 3.5 crore and one lakh visitors. "Heeding to this massive public response, we have decided to reach out to a larger section of Bangaloreans," he added. The exhibition will also have eco-friendly items such as leatherwear, furniture, handmade paper, agarbathis, spices, sandalwood products, bamboo and cane products, pickles, and other homemade food products. The utsav is to be conducted in three phases, the first from January 1 at Rajajinagar and Koramangala and then at Malleswaram, Ulsoor, and the Institution of Engineers on Queen's Road here. There will be exhibitions later in eight districts. On January 5, the KVIB will open its Jute Service Centre set up here with Central assistance. The idea is to promote jute products, especially jute bags as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags.
