Azad heads panel on J&K

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Dec. 28. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today set up a nine-member, multi-party coordination committee to monitor the functioning of the Jammu and Kashmir Government.

It will be headed by the State Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The Congress will be represented by the Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, and Saifuddin Soz besides Mr. Azad, while Mehbooba Mufti and Trilok Singh, Rajya Sabha MP, will be the PDP representatives. The other members are Bhim Singh of the Panthers Party, Yousuf Tarigami of the PDF, Rigzin Zohra of the Leh UT Front and Haji Nisar Ali, independent MLA from Kargil.

The alliance partners had agreed in-principle to set up the committee soon after the new Government took over on October 26. The final composition was decided after consultations with the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The committee will monitor the implementation of the common minimum programme.

Ms. Gandhi has appointed similar committees in most of the States ruled by the Congress.
