Action plan to check Dengue fever

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 28. The district administration has formulated an action plan to check the outbreak of Dengue fever. A meeting convened by the District Collector, E. Ayyappan, here today decided to carry out a survey in the affected areas and provide emergency medical aid to the patients.

Taluk hospitals and medical colleges will be equipped to handle Dengue fever cases. Vector control will be stepped up and fogging machines will be pressed into service in mosquito-infested areas for three months. Larva breeding centres will be identified and destroyed.

Diagnostic facilities will be introduced at public health centres and the Medical College hospital and experienced lab technicians will be appointed. The meeting was informed that 18 cases had been reported from various places in the district.

The meeting decided to enlist the support of the district panchayat, block panchayats, City Corporation, municipalities, gram panchayats, Government departments, voluntary agencies and residents associations in the programme of action.

The Collector said a meeting of elected representatives, mediapersons and Government officials would be convened to discuss the implementation of the action plan.

An official pressnote issued here today directed the public to avoid waterlogging and ensure personal and environmental sanitation. It said Dengue fever was a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that bite during daytime. The symptoms are intense fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, joint ache and occasional swelling on the skin. The mosquitoes breed in water that collects in abandoned vessels, buckets, cement tanks, flower pots, bottles and grinding stones.
