Old is gold?

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 28. Is old always gold? For the KSRTC, the answer seems to be an emphatic yes. When the new superfast bus of the Corporation rolled to a stop in front of the Press Club, those who gathered around it were full of admiration for the chassis, the design, the interior... until somebody took a look at the wheels of the bus.

In stark contrast to the brand new bus were tyres that looked too worn out __ tyres that had been retreaded any number of times. Talk of old wine in a new bottle! When somebody pointed out this to an official of the KSRTC who appeared proud of the new bus, pat came the reply. "Oh, this is nothing but standard practice. You see, we are on an austerity drive. So whenever a new bus comes, we take off the tyres and put them in an old bus and take the tyres from the old bus and put them in the new bus.'' Just how this ``standard practice'' could have anything to do with saving money for the KSRTC could not be fathomed out by those present. Maybe, there are `wheels within wheels' for the matter.
