This Day That Age
Dr. H. S. Marquand, a former Labour Member of the House of Commons, addressed the Athenaeum in Calcutta on the 29th. He dealt with the functioning of the British Parliament, and how the representatives of the people discharged their responsibilities. Dr. Marquand observed that Parliament in Britain was ancient, and at the same time it was modern. The MPs were whole-time welfare officers. They kept in constant touch with their constituents, who kept the Members on their toes. Attendance in the House of Commons was compulsory.
