Digvijay lifts trophy


Digvijay Singh, winner of the Royal Challenge Grand Prix golf tournament in Chennai on Sunday.

Chennai Dec. 29. It was a brilliant show by Digvijay Singh of Meerut, who played steady golf right through the week to card an 18-under par (262) to win his third title of the season at the Royal Challenge Grand Prix at the Madras Gymkhana golf course here on Sunday.

Digvijay who won in Srinagar and at the Cosmopolitan Club tournament took home Rs. 1,29,000.

The current Order of Merit leader Mukesh Kumar of Mhow (MP) finished runner-up to take home Rs. 89,000.

Starting the day with a bogey on the par-three second hole where his ball was plugged in the bunker, Digvijay dropped another stroke on the par-four fifth hole after hitting a flyer from the fairway, before gaining momentum. Rohtas Singh and Sanjay Kumar carded rounds of 65 and 69 respectively to tie for the sixth spot at five-under, 275. R. Murthy, who started the day with

dropped shots on the second and fifth, finished at three-under (277) to take the eighth spot.

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one by Manohar Dike of Mumbai that earned him an extra Rs. 10,000. He aced the 177-yard, par-three second hole, using a six-iron, and was thrilled with his achievement.

Sandeep Syal played all four rounds of the Royal Challenge Grand Prix to win the amateur title in front of his home crowd.

The local amateur golfer carded a creditable one-over, 71 taking his 72-hole total to one-under-par 279.

The scores: 262 - Digvijay Singh (64, 67, 63, 68); 270 - Mukesh Kumar (69, 67, 65, 69); 271 - Feroz Ali (68, 68, 69, 66); 274 - Amritinder Singh (69, 69, 69, 67); Rafiq Ali (70, 68, 67, 69); 275 - Sanjay Kumar (67, 69, 70, 69); Rohtas Singh (71, 70, 69, 65); 277 - R. Murthy (69, 69, 67, 72); 278 - C. Muniyappa (72, 71, 71, 64).
