Karnataka failed to convert a handful of penalty corners that came its way. In the two previous matches, Karnataka had received 17 penalty corners in all and had no success. Despite receiving 12 penalty corners in this game, seven in the first half and five in the second Karnataka was able to make use of the 12th one. The conversion came in the 58th minute when Nilesh finally tapped the ball in off a rebound from A. Samad's pads. Earlier, Karnataka had taken the lead with Chengappa scoring off a pass from Vineeth Michael a minute before half-time. Tamil Nadu made its first appearance in the tournament in Pool `F' with a strong performance. Weaving through opponent Gujarat at will after a slow beginning, Tamil Nadu got its rhythm going and ended with a satisfying 4-0 win. The first goal for Tamil Nadu was off a penalty corner with N. Senthil Kumaran being the successful scorer in the 25th minute. Gujarat wilted under a strong onslaught in the second half and V. Ashwin (31st) brought up the second goal for Tamil Nadu. V. Raja's brace (38th and 43rd) closed the doors for Gujarat. Jammu and Kashmir was the other team to make a bold showing. Pitted against a weak Vidarbha team, J & K managed to score at will. Actually, Vidarbha's goal-keeper Monish Patel made some great saves to spare his side from a defeat by a huge margin. J & K also missed out eight penalty corners in the first half and scored off only one out of the five received in the second half. Prabjot Singh was the pivot of J & K's win scoring thrice (37th, 44th, 59th) Rajinder Singh scored off a penalty stroke (58th) to complete the tally. The officials came down heavily on the issue of over-aged players. After trapping players (two from Karnataka, one from Orissa, one from J & K and one from Andhra Pradesh) on Saturday more players were referred to the doctor for verifying their ages. The results: Pool `A': Jammu & Kashmir 4 (Prabjot Singh 37th, 44th, 59th and Rajinder Singh 58th) bt Vidarbha 0; Karnataka 2 (Chengappa 29th and Nilesh 58th) bt Bhopal 0. Pool `E': Punjab 3 (Manvir Singh 13th, Navjosh Singh 34th and Amit Bhargav 42) bt Madhya Bharat 0; Delhi 0 drew with Jharkand 0.
