Missionaries' good work made tribals convert: VHP

PUNE DEC. 29. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad today admitted that the good social service done by missionaries in the tribal areas had encouraged the tribals to embrace Christianity.

``We had neglected our brethren in the tribal areas for very long," the VHP joint general secretary, Shyam Gupta, admitted while briefing reporters on the deliberations at the VHP's governing council and board of trustees' meeting, which concluded today.

The missionaries were able to reach educational and medical facilities to the tribal areas as a result of which the tribals were weaned away. The VHP had therefore decided to concentrate on the tribal areas in a big way. "The VHP is currently running 5,000 schools in different parts of the country. These single-teacher schools impart non-formal education to tribal children."

"The VHP proposes to start such schools in one lakh villages, where the Government is unable to provide formal education.''
