Jammu & Kashmir
The committee, which would be headed by the Financial Commissioner (Home), with the Director-General of the State police and Additional Director-General (CID) as its members, was constituted after the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed Government came under severe attack for releasing militants, including the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief, Yaseen Malik, without a proper procedure. The post of Financial Commissioner (Home) is equivalent to that of Chief Secretary of the State. The State Government's notification had stated that one post in the four-member screening committee had been kept vacant for the representative of the Centre. However, four days after the announcement of the committee, the Union Home Ministry was still considering the name for the post. Sources said the Ministry was considering the nomination of the head of the State Intelligence Bureau as its representative or a Special Secretary in the Ministry. The Deputy Prime Minister and Union Home Minister, L.K. Advani, had welcomed the constitution of the committee saying ``there should be no general release and granting amnesty to anyone should undergo a proper process.''
NC alleges conspiracy
The National Conference has alleged that the People's Democratic Party- Congress coalition Government was formed with a deep-rooted conspiracy against the people of the State and warned that any attempt to change J&K's Muslim majority character would not be allowed. "The present coalition Government came into being under a veiled conspiracy against the people of Jammu and Kashmir'', senior NC leaders, including its general-secretary, Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, and former Works Minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar, said while winding up the day-long party convention here on Saturday evening. He alleged that a veiled conspiracy was going on to divide Jammu and Kashmir on communal lines. ``We will oppose any such move to annex Ladakh and Jammu aimed at changing the Muslim majority character of the State.''
