Protect undertrials, Maudany tells court

By Our Staff Reporter

Coimbatore Dec. 30 . The Kerala-based People's Democratic Party leader, Abdul Nasser Maudany, today sought the intervention of the special court for bomb blast cases to ensure protection to undertrials and their families visiting the prison.

He moved a petition before the judge, R. Sivakumar, stating that his wife, who, along with their two children, came to meet him on Friday, was subjected to "harassment" at the prison gate.

He accused the police of having abused his wife in unparliamentary language besides causing an injury in the forehead of his five-year-old son by pushing him down.

The police recovered cellphones from three of his supporters only when they were coming out of the prison after meeting him, and not when they were going in, as was made out to be.

He wanted to know how cellphones could be taken into the prison after the visitors' hours i.e., after 3 p.m. and said the police were fabricating charges against him and his family members.

As an undertrial, Maudany sought the intervention of the court against the "excesses" on the prisoners of the minority community and their family members. He sought directions to the police and the Prison department for action against three police officials, whom he held responsible for the incident.

He also alleged that most of the riots and communal unrest were a result of excesses committed by the uniformed service personnel against Muslim women.

The judge expressed reservations about the jurisdiction of the special court on such issues and advised Maudany to send a petition to the authorities concerned through the jail officials, with a copy marked for the court.

Maudany expressed lack of faith in the prison authorities and alleged that they acted in favour of a particular group, thus causing unrest among the prisoners belonging to the minority community.

Earlier, when the court took up the arguments on a petition filed by Siddiq Ali (son of S.A. Basha) seeking change of counsel, Sathya Chandran, counsel from Chennai, presented his arguments and the judge posted the orders on the petition for tomorrow.
