Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the write-up "Towards a `new' state?" (Dec. 31) by Hasan Suroor. The new Archbishop of Canterbury may be correct in stating that the sovereignty of the nation-state in Europe has declined. The European Union is proof of the contention. Perhaps, it is the harbinger of what will take place in other parts of the world. However, for the underdeveloped countries, not only is a state necessary, so is the spirit of nationalism. These societies need a binding force to unite them, to give them the will to move forward so that they can progress and become developed. One of the reasons for India not moving forward faster is the lack of cohesion and a collective will.
