ITES: Year 2003 ushers in new job opportunities

By Preeti Mishra

BANGALORE DEC. 31. The National Association of Software Service Companies's (Nasscom) annual review of year 2002 revealed some interesting aspects of the Indian IT-enabled services sector. During fiscal 2002, ITES had a phenomenal growth rate of 71 per cent vis-a-vis 22 per cent growth clocked by the Indian IT industry. The ITES segment itself has so far been a `job mecca' for freshers.

Come 2003, however, the ITES segment and BPO in particular will recruit more lateral hires (experienced people) with domain expertise as compared to the existing recruitment pattern of hiring fresh graduates. The BPO sector with its focus on banking, finance and insurance, payroll management, airlines and telecom vertical for projects will require people with domain expertise in these areas.

There is heartening news for freshers though, as the New Year ushers in a whole gamut of job opportunities including multimedia and retailing. "Combined with the entertainment and retailing segments, the multimedia sector throws open new jobs for youngsters. With 10,000 job vacancies in the multimedia sector, we face a shortfall of nearly 4,000 people," Pramod Khera, MD, Aptech and Arena Multimedia told The Hindu. The Arena Animation Academy with 15 centres has trained over 2000 students till date, according to Mr. Khera.

Poised for growth in India, Multimedia's usage has expanded in films, television, animation, gaming, music, Internet, digital products and services. A Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) report projects revenues from the entertainment industry (includes films, TV and Music) to double to $6 billion by 2006. Moreover, the thrust on the multimedia segment is visible with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) declaring 2002-03 as the `Year of the Multimedia'. Requirements in these segments include supervisors, animators, compositors and programmers.

The Indian retailing segment states a CII-McKinsey report has the potential to touch $450-500 billion over the next few years. And what this means to new graduates: remuneration ranging from Rs.12,000 to Rs. 20,000 for positions like store manager, shift-in-charge, trainer, district manager and regional managers.

"Positions like customer sales representatives and drivers can be a stepping stone to managerial cadre jobs. For instance, Matt Zubradt, VP-International, Domino's Pizza (DP), joined our company as a driver in the Phoenix (U.S.) outlet," remarked Arvind Nair, CEO, Domino's Pizza India. DP has plans to open 8-10 outlets across India in the coming year. With retail chains like Food World and Domino's Pizza on a high expansion mode, the year 2003 brings good tidings for freshers out on the employment prowl.
