'The rise of Modi'

Sir, — Apropos Kancha Ilaiah's "The rise of Modi" (Dec. 26): People hailing from other backward castes are never allowed to grow in their organisations as rightly pointed out by the author and, in fact, the founder of the Dravida Kazhagam and reformist, the late Periyar, often found fault with the communist parties for being dominated by foreign-educated, upper-caste leaders. No leader from the lowest strata of society, barring one or two, was ever allowed to rise to the leadership level.

R. Ramasubramanian,
Vadavalli, T.N.
