Human cloning

Sir, — It was heartening to read the news item that the United States President, George W. Bush, is "deeply" distressed by efforts to clone human beings. And that he strongly supports legislation banning all such cloning experiments.

There can be little doubt that manipulation of human genes and fertile eggs to clone a baby is not only abhorrent but also unethical and immoral.

Besides the ethical, moral and medico-legal objections, the risks and technological barriers prove that human cloning is wholly unacceptable and unwarranted.

One million women die each year due to reproductive tract infections, including sexually transmitted diseases. Still many more suffer from long-term or permanent disabilities due to pregnancy-related complications. In such a situation, it would be prudent to spend money on improving the children's environment than on cloning experiments.

K. Thiagarajan,
Chennai
