Hearing on Gilani's bail plea adjourned to Jan. 8

New Delhi Jan. 4. A Delhi court today adjourned to January 8 the hearing on the bail plea of journalist Iftikar Gilani, who is in jail since June last under the Official Secrets Act.

The Addition Sessions Judge, V. P. Vaishya, deferred the hearing till Wednesday after the public prosecutor informed him that the Government was likely to make its stand clear on the issue by Tuesday.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, had on Friday adjourned the hearing on Mr. Gilani's discharge application till January 7 after the Under Secretary (Home), B. R. Dhiman, sought more time to formulate the Government's response in the case.

Earlier, the court had adjourned the hearing on his bail application saying it would decide the matter only after knowing the Government's stand on the issue.

The Director General Military Intelligence (MI), O. S. Locha, had earlier told the court that the documents seized from Mr. Gilani, son-in-law of the Hurriyat Conference leader, Syed Ali Shah Gilani, were not classified as claimed by the police.

Mr. Locha, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Neeraj Kumar, and Dhiman were summoned in person by the CMM on Mr. Ohri's plea for action against them in connection with alleged filing of a ``false'' MI opinion.

Police had on December 13 filed the second opinion purportedly given by the MI, which said the information seized from Mr. Gilani was directly related to the defence of the country and its disclosure was likely to affect the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
