Jammu & Kashmir
By Our Staff Reporter
The tourism industry, besides being the backbone of the State's economy, provided gainful employment to thousands of people. Before the State was plunged into turmoil, the industry generated Rs. 600 crores and contributed around 12 per cent to the GDP. In the last week of December, the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, invited 24 top tour operators of the country to discuss various proposals to revive the moribund tourism industry. The other priority before the new Government, according to sources, is to develop the hills of Jammu region as tourist attractions. Patnitop, sandwiched between Udhampur and Doda districts, is to be accorded top priority. Similarly, a detailed tourism policy is being framed in which developing a triangular of hill spots Patnitop, Kud and Mantalai is one of the key aspects.
