Letters to the Editor
Sir, It is heartening to note that a Nuclear Command Authority has come into force. Only the Prime Minister is authorised to manage the nuclear weapons. But the larger question of the possibility of a nuclear conflict needs to be addressed rather than emphasising too much about who has the authority to order a nuclear strike. When India and Pakistan were close to war last year, the possibility of a nuclear exchange persisted. What is needed for is the nuclear option to be given up by both India and Pakistan. The Indian sub-continent should be declared a nuclear-free zone with sufficient guarantees.
D.B.N. Murthy,
