HYDERABAD Jan. 7 . The British Minister for Trade and Industry, Patricia Hewitt, here on Monday launched the operations of the UK-based Shrimati Pushpawati Loomba Memorial Trust in the State which aims to provide education to 100 children of poor widows.

Addressing an impressive gathering, she described the initiative by the UK-based charity as "wonderful'' which brings hope to children and their widowed mothers. Among those present were Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Mark Runacres, Acting British High Commissioner, Lord Dholakia, president of the Liberal Democratic Party, Raj Loomba, Chairman of the Trust, and Karan Bilimoria, Chairman of the Trust Advisory Council.

The British Minister and Lord Dholakia handed over cheques of Rs. 650 to each of the 20 children who were accompanied by their mothers/relatives. Each of the 120 students is to get Rs. 650 a month for five years.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dhindsa said that extending assistance to children of widows to pursue education was a noble gesture.

The Hyderabad-born Bilimoria, who is CEO and founder of the Cobra Beer and General Bilimoria Wines, said operations of the trust, launched in seven States, would soon be spread to Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The trust was established in June 1997 by Raj and Veema Loomba in memory of Raj's mother, Pushpawati, who died in 1992 in the UK.

Widowed at the age of 37 in 1954 with seven children to raise by herself, she devoted all her time to providing a thorough education to the children, although she had no formal schooling herself.

Later, the British Minister witnessed the signing of a distributorship agreement between the UK-based VSN International and Sierra Atlantic of Hyderabad.

The agreement gives Sierra Atlantic all-India distributorship rights for the VSN's Genstat Software package for statistical data analysis.
