Rein in Togadia

Sir, — This refers to the analysis of the happenings in our country in 2002 in Anil Dharkar's article `Judging the future by the past' (Magazine section, Jan. 5).

The Frankenstein could have been controlled had the Prime Minister put his foot firmly down by showing the door to Narendra Modi. Mr. Modi returned to power with the blessings of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and to a certain extent some forces which worked hard for his re-entry.

That the VHP's international general secretary, Praveen Togadia, will consume L.K. Advani and Atal Behari Vajpayee is a pragmatic and pertinent statement. Mr. Togadia has the temerity to say that if the present leaders at the Centre cannot prevent attacks on temples, they should take sanyas and go to Ayodhya and chant Lord Ram's name. It is time the Prime Minister put Praveen Togadia in his place.

Mani Natarajan,
Chennai

Sir, — The VHP leader, Parveen Togadia's remarks about death to opponents have remained uncondemned, which means he is being encouraged. The unity of India is being driven to segmentation under fear. How does he have the liberty to propagate such statements, with the so-called national leaders remaining silent spectators. This is a process of instigation.

Y. Rajarathnam,
Madurai, T.N.
